Meet Dr. Astafurov

Konstantin Astafurov, M.D., Ph.D., is a fellowship-trained retina specialist at Monmouth Retina in Manalapan, NJ. He specializes in both medical and surgical retina.

Dr. Astafurov joined Monmouth Retina in the Fall of 2022. He earned his undergraduate bachelor’s degree at City University of New York, Brooklyn College and then completed a combined MD/PhD program at State University of New York, Downstate Health Sciences University in Brooklyn, NY. His PhD was in Molecular and Cell Biology and focused on investigating detrimental effects of inflammation in the retina and optic nerve. During his training, he also served as a vice-president of the SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University Graduate School’s Student Council and as an instructor in the Health Science Academy at the Arthur Ashe Institute for Urban Health.

Dr. Astafurov completed a residency in ophthalmology at SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University followed by a one-year medical retina fellowship at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN and a two-year surgical retina fellowship at NJRetina / Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in New Brunswick, NJ.

Dr. Astafurov is committed to serving others and has volunteered as a Senior Medical Student at The Brooklyn Free Clinic and has also engaged in international eye care mission work in Jamaica, the West Indies. 

He has served as a scientific reviewer for several peer-reviewed journals and has also authored multiple research articles and won research grants from the VitreoRetinal Surgery Foundation and the American Academy of Ophthalmology.

When he’s not seeing patients, Dr. Astafurov enjoys spending time and traveling with his wife and sons, playing soccer and tennis and investigating new research ideas.
